HOW DOES THE "Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables" PROGRAM WORK WITH FOOD PANTRIES AND OTHER COMMUNITY AGENCIES?

Sessions emphasize the use of frozen, canned, and dried products as well as fresh "in-season" fruits and vegetables. Each session offers the following:

  • Easy, low-cost recipes
  • A taste sample of a recipe made with the featured fruit or vegetable
  • Tips and ideas for planning and preparing delicious, healthy meals
  • Information on stretching food dollars
  • Food safety information
  • Food and nutrition resource information

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A NUTRITION EDUCATION SESSION?

Nutritionists from the JSY program provide nutrition education sessions at a variety of sites across the state of New York. The purpose of this program is to:

  • Empower low income New Yorkers to make healthier food choices.
  • Convey the message that consumption of fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of chronic diseases (such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer).
  • Enhance nutrition knowledge and skills in purchasing and preparing the best quality fruits and vegetables.
